Bluing Agent "Ultra-3" – Even Blackening for Steel
The Ultra-3 bluing agent provides reliable protection for steel workpieces against corrosion. One significant advantage of this bluing agent is that it can be applied at room temperature, greatly reducing the effort compared to hot bluing. You don’t need special equipment or ventilation, and working with the room-temperature solution also reduces safety risks.
During the application, a black layer forms on the workpiece, which protects it from harmful environmental influences when combined with oils. The Ultra-3 bluing agent is particularly effective on low-alloy steels, including chromium-containing variants. Additionally, you can dilute the concentrate with water up to 1:4 for structural steel without affecting the bluing quality.
Ideal for Workpieces with High Dimensional Accuracy
Many corrosion protection methods add an extra material layer to the surface, which can cause problems with tight tolerances. This is not the case with bluing.
The chemical reaction between the metal surface and the Ultra-3 bluing agent creates a protective layer that is only two microns thick. This layer protects the workpiece from corrosion without affecting its dimensional accuracy.
How to Use the Ultra-3 Bluing Agent
Ensure the solution is at room temperature to achieve optimal results. Avoid using it outdoors in cold temperatures.
-
Preparation: Dip the cleaned and degreased workpiece into the conditioner for 2-10 minutes to prepare it for bluing.
-
Bluing: Dilute the Ultra-3 bluing agent with water up to 1:4 for structural steel and immerse the workpiece in the solution. A uniform black surface will form within a few minutes.
-
Aftercare: Remove the workpiece from the solution, rinse it thoroughly with clean water, and dry it. For optimal corrosion protection, the workpiece should be treated with a suitable oil afterward. The combination of bluing and oil provides long-lasting protection.
Suitable Materials
The Ultra-3 bluing agent is ideal for iron as well as unalloyed and low-alloy steels. For alloyed steels, you should use the included conditioner for optimal preparation.
For best results, we recommend bluing steels with up to 3% chromium content. For higher alloy steels, we recommend our quick bluing agent "Ultra-5" or the brush-on bluing "Ultra-7". Note that normal bluing does not work on stainless steel (inox), as the required oxidation does not occur.
Advantages of the Ultra-3 Bluing Agent
- Application at room temperature – no heating required
- Can be diluted with water up to 1:4 for structural steel
- Flexible use in any location with appropriate temperature
- No dimensional changes to the workpiece
- Excellent corrosion protection in combination with suitable oils and greases
- Improves adhesion of lubricants
- Optimized emergency running properties for plain bearings
