Ultra-3 dip burnishing - for uniformly blackened steel
Ultra-3 immersion bluing protects steel workpieces from corrosion. A particular advantage of this immersion bluing is its use as a room-warm immersion bath. This considerably reduces the effort required compared to hot burnishing. Because for this cold burnishing you need neither special ventilation devices nor other special equipment. In addition, the safety risk is reduced by working with the room-warm solution. With Ultra-3 immersion burnishing, an even and stable protective layer forms on the workpiece, reliably protecting it from damaging environmental influences. This has several advantages for low-alloy steels (especially chromium-containing steel).
Ultra-3 dip bluing ideal for objects with high dimensional accuracy
In many measures for corrosion protection, material is applied to the surface of the workpiece. This poses a problem, especially for objects with high dimensional accuracy, as it changes the dimensions. This is not the case with burnishing. This is because a chemical reaction occurs when the material surface comes into contact with the cold burnishing. Oxygen is deposited in the metal surface, which changes its properties in terms of susceptibility to corrosion. The protective layer, which is no more than two micrometres thick and is formed by the oxygen atoms, does not affect the dimensional accuracy of the workpiece in any way.
This is how bluing with Ultra-3 dip bluing works
When burnishing, make absolutely sure that the solution is at room temperature and therefore refrain from using it outdoors in cool temperatures.
The first step is to immerse the cleaned and reliably degreased workpiece in the conditioner for 5-30 minutes to prepare steels for burnishing. Then immerse the item in the room-warm burnishing agent. Within a few minutes, a continuous black surface forms.
Now remove the burnished object from the solution, rinse it thoroughly with clear water and dry it. Please bear in mind that you will only achieve reliable corrosion protection if you treat the workpiece with an appropriate oil after burnishing. Only the combination of immersion burnishing and oil or grease will lead to the desired result.
For which materials is Ultra-3 immersion burnishing suitable?
With Ultra-3 immersion burnishing you can treat iron as well as unalloyed and low-alloyed steels. To optimally prepare alloyed steels for burnishing, use the enclosed conditioner. Zinc can also be treated effectively with Ultra-3.
For a high-quality result, you should only blacken steels with a maximum chrome content of 5 %. For higher alloyed steels, we recommend our Ultra-5 fast burnishing or our Ultra-7 brush burnishing. Normal burnishing does not work with stainless steel, as the oxidation necessary for successful burnishing does not take place.
Advantages of Ultra-3 dip burnishing
Burnishing with Ultra-3 dip bluing offers numerous advantages.
- Immersion bluing at room temperature of the solution - heating is not necessary
- Can be used in all locations with the appropriate temperature
- No dimensional change of the workpiece
- Good corrosion protection in combination with appropriate greases
- Improved adhesion of lubricants
- Significantly improved emergency running properties of plain bearings
When burnishing, be sure to follow the instructions on the exact application and on the necessary safety measures.
